There’s one thing they never tell you about when the sky falls-it’s deafeningly quiet. No sound accompanies the collapse, no thunderclap, no cracking of the heavens. The universe has this really cruel manner of making disaster look serene. You’d think that when your whole world crumbles, it would at least be accompanied by some dramatic fanfare. But no. When the sky fell yesterday, all I heard was the quiet hum of nothingness.Among the rubble, amidst the shards of clouds and bits of blue, I discovered I had misplaced my bank account. It had simply vanished. There, solid as bedrock, concrete evidence of security, it was gone in an instant. The aspect was somewhat funny; it was like laughter in a dream-hollow and futile.

How Do You Breathe When the Sky Is Gone?

We are programmed to live as if the sky were some sort of constant in our lives. It is the ceiling to all things, that limit we never question. Yes, the stars are there, too, but very distant, cold bodies. The sky is what encloses us with its warmth. Our hopes float in it, airplanes carve their paths across it, while clouds pull over and then wisp away, like those passing thoughts through our minds.
