There is an old story about a small town with two churches and one whiskey distillery. Members of both churches complained that the distillery gave the community a bad image. The owner of the distillery was an atheist. The churches tried to shut down the place but were unsuccessful. The churches decided to hold a joint Saturday night prayer meeting. They would pray and ask God for help. All through the prayer meeting, a terrible storm raged outside. To the delight of the church members, lightning struck the distillery, causing it to catch on fire and burn to the ground. The insurance adjusters notified the distillery owner they would not pay for his damages because the lightning that caused the fire was an act of God and was excluded from the insurance policy. So, the distillery owner sued the churches, claiming they had conspired with God to destroy his business. The defendants denied they had done anything to cause the fire. The trial judge said: I find it very perplexing that the plaintiff, an atheist, is professing his belief in the power of prayer to God, while the defendants, Christians and church members, are denying it.
