Since 2021, Bulgaria has been trapped in a political gridlock, with election after election failing to bring stability. Just last Sunday, the country held its seventh election in three years, hoping to find a way out of this deadlock finally. Unfortunately, “the results look like they’ll just keep the crisis going,” meaning Bulgaria might soon be heading for yet another election.

From 2009 to 2021, Bulgaria was relatively stable.

The country was led by “the GERB party, under Boyko Borissov,” a former mayor of Sofia who originally rose to power on an anti-corruption platform. However, over time, Borissov and GERB gained a reputation for corruption instead.

As of 2023, Bulgaria is ranked the EU’s second-most corrupt state, according to Transparency International.
