About a year ago on April 15, 2023, a violent armed conflict erupted in Sudan, a previously unfamiliar country to most of us, located in North Africa. This, as a result, sparked one of the worst humanitarian crises of the 21st century. While the world’s attention was focused on the distressing events unfolding in Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Palestine, Sudan was being silently engulfed in flames and torn apart by this unspoken and undocumented war.

Now, this conflict in itself is highly complex, and comprehending the intricacies of what’s happening in Sudan requires going back in time to around 2020.

For context, in present-day Sudan, the root of this ongoing war lies with the two leaders of the country who have held power since the orchestration of a successful coup back in October 2021. On one side, there is an army led by General Fatah Alburan, and on the other side, a militia group known as the Rapid Support Forces commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.The complexity of the conflict arises from the fact that these two men who are now at war with each other were not always rivals.
