Recent engagements between China & Sri Lanka
China & Sri Lanka and it’s mutual truce
Recent Friday, October 20th marked the moment between China & Sri Lanka on Chinese soil, Beijing. Counterparts of both nations i.e. Mr. Xi Jin Ping & Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe attended the 3rd Belt & Road Forum International Cooperation.
Mr. Xi reiterated that China would work with Sri Lanka to promote joint high-quality Belt & Road cooperation and push for new progress in developing a China-Sri Lanka strategic cooperation partnership featuring sincere mutual assistance & lasting friendship.
However, it is a help in disguise by China as it already lent a loan of $ 7 billion to Sri Lanka for its debt management. There is widespread criticism about China that it puzzles the neighboring countries through its self-benefiting debt crisis strategy. Following the suit, the debtor had no option left but to attain China’s sovereignty over them. E.g.- Humbatota port of Sri Lanka or the Electricity Grid of Laos Democratic Republic.
Further, China added its willingness to increase its imports from Sri Lanka & promote more Chinese investment in the island nation and its sustainable development. It is fully acknowledged by the Sri Lankan President Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe that China helped his country during the toughest time & helped the country to optimise it’s debt. Most rational logic behind the truce.
Recently Nepal stepped out from China’s security initiatives, & made a clear poignant statement that it can’t claim any right over Nepal’s sovereignty.
But it becomes the responsibility of Sri Lanka to agree on any exclusive pursuit made by China as in the case of initiatives like the Global Developmental Initiative/ Global Security Initiative/Global Civilization Initiative.
