Eighty per cent of global trade happens through the world’s seas, which is why superpowers strive to control these crucial trade routes. Soon, however, one country may disrupt this global trade system, and that country is none other than Canada. What makes Canada so significant in the future is not just its large coastline, ice-free ports, or strategic location,
but the Arctic region.

Many analysts predict that Canada is on the brink of transforming the global trade dynamics due to the Arctic. But what exactly is the Arctic, and why is it so vital for world trade?

The Arctic is the vast, blue-coloured region in the north of our planet, encompassing the Arctic Ocean and several countries.Among these, Canada stands out as the most prominent, with its entire northern and northwestern territories lying within the Arctic region. Denmark follows, primarily due to its control over Greenland, the world’s largest non-continental island, where 85% of the area is covered in ice, leaving only 15% inhabited. Iceland ranks third, with two of its islands, Grimsey and Kolbeinsey, inside the Arctic Circle.
