While on a mission trip with young adults, I spoke with a young lady who said she was facing a dilemma. She was finishing a degree in chemical engineering while also feeling a call to be in Christian ministry. How could a chemical engineering degree connect with her faith?Her role during the mission trip, facilitating home repairs to make them warmer, safer, and dryer, had made her question her path. Sharing the love of God in such practical ways had made her believe that her degree and knowledge in chemical engineering were useless. Her goal had always been to complete a degree in her field of study, secure a job, which would be easy given her field, and pursue the American Dream. Now, she wasn’t even sure she wanted to finish the degree.I asked her, “Don’t you think the world needs chemical engineers who approach their job from a Christian, spiritual perspective? Doesn’t the world of Chemical engineering need people of faith, people with a connection to God, to help that field balance profits with peace, advances that are good for all, not for some?”She said she’d have to think about it.
