Something was off, not right, wrong, missing, or extra. As I lay in bed, I felt that I should be responding. That feeling woke me up in the middle of the night, and then I was lying there wondering what I should be responding to because it was very quiet.This feeling, I learned later, was the gift of discernment. Discernment had been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, but I rarely acknowledged it or gave it a second thought. I labeled it intuition, which is correct; it’s just not a complete description. Throughout my life, I have had “feelings” about people, places, things, and situations. In retrospect, my discernment has kept me out of trouble when I intentionally acknowledge and follow it. Unfortunately, I often turn it off without understanding or attempting to foster my discernment.That night, as discernment woke me up, I was listening hard. Can you do that? Can a person listen hard? I was listening with, maybe not every fiber of my being, but with more of my fiber than usual.Listening had become something I did more intentionally.
