The wheel of the year continues in its churning grind. Before you know it, Autumn has ended and we have been catapulted into Spring, to no applause and a lot of the indifference which characterises our vulgar era. According to the penpushers, March 21st formally signals the beginning of the season of rebirth and renewal in this musty old corner of Central Europe where I happen to live. Not that you would know it by looking outside the window, yet.

Still, the days have become somewhat longer and imperceptibly warmer, albeit shaken by blustery winds, the leitmotiv of March if there ever was one. The sun is still missing in action, though, and I am tempted to put up posters around town and launch impassioned appeals on the old wireless for information regarding its whereabouts.

And to think that the beginning of the month had been unseasonably warm, well into the tens, reaching almost to touch (but not quite), that holiest of holies of temperature, the iconic 20 degrees centigrade. Yes, American friends, we are talking about the scale for measuring temperature concocted by Swedish astronomer in the eighteenth century, not his Polish-Dutch counterpart , which is more popular across the pond…
