It’s been a long time in the medium. I have been writing articles for a long time in the medium, but most recently, I joined the partner program (My New Account). I have eventually received my first payout, which could be an exciting milestone.
However, I was surprised when a significant portion of my earning was deducted in taxes, which is around 1/3 of my total earnings. That’s exactly what happened to me when I received my first Medium earnings for October.

To my surprise, one-third of my total earnings had been withheld for taxes and stripe fees. As someone based in India, I don’t think this is right. I knew there was a tax treaty between India and the U.S. that should reduce the withholding, so why was I being taxed at such a high rate?
