Shria had a sad life, all because she fell in love with the wrong person. They both were just ten when he came to live at her house with his mother and a little brother. They grew up playing together and often wrestled on the mattress and hit each other with pillows.She wished he was a little more gentle with her. But he was strong and he liked showing it.Yet, she fell in love.She dreamt of a life where he was not a bee to her flower but a friend for life. She could not tell the difference between her love and the love they wrote of. She just loved and watched from a distance as he grew and made new friends, leaving her behind, and only glanced when they passed each other in the school corridors. She would try and smile but doubted he would smile back. She couldn’t take that heartbreak. That would be the last thread that was holding them together. She wanted to believe if she reached out, he would reach back.They lived in the same home until they went to different colleges. Their paths were never to cross like they did before. There were no shoulder nudges, no snacking together.She still watched him smile and smiled along. If he is this happy, maybe he will find a way back to her one day. Maybe he will remember she made him happy once too.

Aashi woke up in the middle of the night to a loud thunderstorm. Beside her, turned away, was her husband, fast asleep. She snuggled up close, pressing the cheeks of her face into his back. Nearby, their toddler was cooing in the cradle. She walked up to the window and felt the cold, water droplets on her face. She remembered the first night in this house after their marriage. She had said no but her husband said yes so, they consummated their marriage. A few days later he came back frustrated from work and pushed her violently. She felt for him as he was very angry at his boss. That anger was not for her and she took the peace in that. But it did not end there and she suffered his mood swings every day.Some days he was the loving knight and some the monster she tried to hide from. Sometimes behind the kitchen counter, pretending to work on his food so he would show some mercy and, sometimes on phone calls with her family. He must not know what her parents had said when she revealed his volatile nature. “You have to adjust, dear.” Dear! That was enough for her to believe they loved her so they must be right.She was no longer afraid of thunderstorms. They did not spook her anymore. It might be because that was every day of her life. A dog was sitting under the park bench right across the street with its puppy. Aashi could not see their eyes, as to read the expression but she saw the mother keep the puppy close and for the puppy, it was enough.It was not the glorious life of a castle but it was protection no one could doubt. It might have been the encouragement of thunder or sparkles of rain. The next morning, she cooked him breakfast and as he left for work kissed him goodbye. She packed her bags and left the house with her daughter. A rented home with broken plaster was better than a gilded prison. Her daughter will rise in a home with marble floors and no eggshells to walk on.
