Flashcards are like running on a treadmill.

You’re putting in a lot of effort, but not really getting anywhere.

I studied biology in high school — and used flashcards relentlessly.I worked twice as hard as everyone else — but got the same grades.Then I stumbled upon a research paper that totally overhauled my entire study approach.By my final year, I went from being average to graduating at the top of my class.

Why flashcards are not effective

In 2013, scientists set out to answer a simple question.

What’s the best way to study?

The results were shocking.

Most of the popular study methods were rated low in utility(circled in red).

You’re not going to learn anything by reading the same thing over and over again.

The most effective study methods— according to science.

In my final years of high school, I finally figured it out.I cut out all the bullshit study I was doing

flashcards
rereading
highlighting

I started studying less, got better grades than most people, and actually enjoyed it.

How did I do it?I used the high to moderate utility study methods discovered in the research paper.

Method 1 : Self Explanation

In high school biology, I used to cram flashcards with definitions of the pancreas, liver, and glucagon, then memorize them and move on.

But I switched to a better method: self-explanation.

I’d break down the topic to a rubber duck on my desk, as if explaining to a 10-year-old.This helped me catch where I was using jargon without actually understanding them.Whenever I hit a gap, I’d revisit my textbook, relearn the material, and try again.I repeated this process until I could explain it to the duck with total clarity.

Method 2 : Practice Testing

Practice testing is simple.Gather as many exam papers as you can find for your test, and consistently work through them.

But Soyal, I don’t have any exam papers.

Then make them.Constructing questions for yourself is also a high value study method.It helps you get familiar with the exact type of questions that will appear on the exam.It’s one of the most obvious but overlooked study methods out there.

Here’s the bottom line.

Good study is about rigorously testing yourself, spotting gaps in your understanding, and then filling them in.

This builds real connections in your brain and gives you a mastery of the material, not just a surface-level familiarity.
