Hell yeah, you’d do well to stop ignoring it and start acting!
Let me make something clear: I am not a political scientist. I am not an expert on geopolitics either. And I am certainly mal-equipped to give you any advice on how to react to the news of North Korea potentially fighting in the war in Ukraine. What I am, however, is very worried. And this is not surprising, but all the more unsettling. Especially considering I should have much time left to be young and dumb…

Too young to know, too important to ignore

I have not raised my fingers to this keyboard yet, in pursuit of expressing my political views. I am fully aware that this is as shaky of a terrain as an 8.0 earthquake on the Richter scale and to be honest, I was frankly too terrified. Mainly my concern was that people would start dismissing me as a hypocrite with no scientific backing.

The problem is that I am very young. In fact, I am a GenZ. Shocker! I mean, who should listen to a youngster trying to make up her mind about politics, right?

That is precisely why I think I NEED to speak up as a young person. Because we are likely to be excluded from the dialogue. Because our voices are disregarded as “too immature” and yet we will be the ones faced with future conflicts.
How are we supposed to learn if we are not allowed to be part of the discussion? We weren’t born to be bystanders. If young voices are excluded from debates on large historic events as they are happening, all politics will ever be is a slowly disintegrating echo chamber of history.

So the reason for this article is: that I want to scream my opinion to the world and see what comes back. The good AND even more importantly, the bad. Because I want to learn early, what other generations found later on in life. Not only do I want to, but I need to. In my generation, we don’t have the luxury to let things happen and watch. If we lean back, chances are, sh**t will get real.

So I will go ahead and tell you about my experience because that is all I can do: Report my personal background and set it up for debate.

Personal Reflections on War

My experience with war started with my mum, who is a history teacher, and ignited my own passion for history. I will forever be grateful for watching a documentary series on the 1900s for breakfast and going on trips to experience history. A good family trip for us is a day of staring at an old ruin, with an audioguide in hand and avid discussions about other historical chapters that it connects to. I am lucky to be able to do that.Being educated in Austria and experiencing the looming aura of terror in Concentration Camps certainly played a role. And I am not saying that this was bad parenting, what my mum and teachers did was a very clear example of moral education. It demands courage to take your class to such horrific sights rather than the adjacent zoo. So when my little mind first encountered the news of North Korean soldiers in Ukraine, I was initially not surprised. I haven’t followed the Ukraine conflict closely enough lately, as I am now living far away from Europe and concerned with other conflicts (which I will mention soon). Still, this topic is always on my backmind.

The experiences I have with Ukrainians are very personal. At the spark of the war in 2022 I was a little therapist in rural Austria, faced with a new challenge: Guiding two families from Ukraine, who had just settled in Austria. They came to the therapy clinic I was working at and requested help for their children’s disabilities. These mothers that I got to know were strong-willed and well-educated women, advocating for their children’s rights in a foreign country. Frankly, they deserve all my admiration and compassion. As time passed by, the shock about a war in Europe started to fade. A year into the war it seemed omnipresent enough for Austrian TV to broadcast many specials, but regard it less in general reporting. And then, about one and a half years into the attack, I moved. And not just to any place, but another hot-pot of political discourse: Taiwan.

Sitting in the hot pot of global politics: Life in Taiwan

There is too much to be said about this and I am certainly the least qualified person to comment on Taiwanese politics at this point in time. But I am collecting my sources, so maybe someday I can at least launch an attempt at stating my experience. What I have learned here in relation to the Ukraine war is interesting however: I have since not observed a looming conflict from my window, but literally on my doorstep. Reports of Chinese planes, ships, and whatever other vessels very close to or even above the island are frequent, to say the least.

When I came, this would sometimes agitate me. Now, my interest is merely sparked at times. Recently there has been a significant increase in Chinese activities due to , commonly referred to as 10/10. Unsurprisingly, this points to the date of this event being October 10th, in commemoration of the Wuchang Uprising in 1911. A historical event that is hardly separable from mainland China. But even the increased military activity on my holiday left me colder than my forgotten morning coffee. Presidential elections in the US or the present news of Ukraine were more invoking for me. China is just like a tiger playing with its muscles, over and over again. Scary, but nothing new.Honestly, I love living here, conflict or not. While I did leave the country during the elections in Taiwan last January, I must say the time back then was certainly charged, but not deadly. So why do North Koreans in Ukraine cut me so deep? Well, it is because of history. Mine and that of my home continent. And our shared world.

Historical Reflections from the DMZ

I went to South Korea last year in the summer and also paid a visit to the . This is the strip of land (more like a huge area actually) that separates North Korea from South Korea. Famously, people look over to “the other side” from there, taking pictures of whatever they can glimpse. On the tour there, we had some weirdly obsessed fellow tourists, who did the tour for the second time just to snap a better picture of the peculiar North Korea. I am sorry, but this behavior felt like they were looking at zoo animals rather than a real-life political issue.

My emotions were with the retellings of our guide, who told us about his family history and how Koreans were ripped apart by a line on a globe. But my most influential memory happened when looking out at the fence, not the other side, from an indoor theatre.Everyone wanted to go outside to the deck to take pictures of “the North”, but I stood in shock in front of the view and a model of the fence. What I saw in front of my eyes was an exact replay of the documentaries of the in the 1980s. With shocking accuracy.

There are few moments that stick with you like this and mine were mostly tied to historic places. Usually, however, these flashbacks to my breakfast classics occurred in museums, on audioguides when walking battlefields, or on walking tours through a new city. What all of these things had in common, was that they were a thing of the past. This fence, however, as much as the model was reminiscent of a museum, was REAL. A real fence in the real world with a real right-now issue tied to it.

Questioning Alliances: Lessons from History

At this point, I think I can propose that I am not a blank page when it comes to political issues. As much as the world would like me to be. I am certainly not an encyclopedia of these three countries either. I am more like an email list. I know who and what to ask, but not necessarily the answer.Unfortunately, my general education rings a bell of alert for one specific characteristic in the current news that sparked my interest: Complex political alliances.I very clearly remember my history teacher and (a famous German speaker in history documentaries) reiterating multiple times that the SPARK of the First World War might have been the .
However, the CAUSE of the world war was that all countries got dragged into the conflict, more or less willingly, through . Yes, the Balkan region was a “Powder keg” back then already and I wish, really sincerely wish, it wasn’t now. Please prove me wrong. The fact is, that countries supporting and fighting together is not a new thing, and certainly not in the way that it is being done in Ukraine. The whole of the and arguably many conflicts since, have been based on a web of alliances. While support is certainly not a new thing, transporting troops from one corner of the earth to another in favor of not your own interest, but your allies in an obvious pursuit of aggression seems a little more tangy. Now, you might ask, how is North Korea doing this different from Germany and the US supporting Ukraine? To that, I have to say that I wish I knew what the base reason for my gut feeling is. I have ideas, but they are not refined enough to put up for discourse. If you can find a non-controversial and non-insulting way to explain, I will shower you with compliments.Probably why I am so agitated is that I have built up an emotional connection to Ukraine, Korea, and Taiwan which leaves me with frostbite thinking about how this alliance might immediately affect my life.

The Emerging Gen Z Voice in Political Discourse

I want to emphasize again, that I am no political expert and do not aim to “paint the devil on the wall”, as we like to say in German. Meaning, that I am not dystopian or naive enough to think that I have found some miracle theory or connection that lets me predict things. On the contrary, this reflection is intended to encourage you and me, to pay closer attention and to question things. Especially as a GenZ. Specifically if thus far, you have found yourself muted by “I don’t know so I shouldn’t speak”.

Truthfully, you will never know EVERYTHING. Actually, you might likely never even know “enough”. The best-case scenario will always be that you know SOMETHING. If you know something but are aware that you don’t know enough, that is amazing! Now go talk to people, tell them about something that you know, look them deep in the eye, and say:” What do you think?”

We are young, we are stupid but we also need to be bold! Ignorance is not a problem, it is when you ignore the other’s stance that becomes an issue. Because then you will forever live in a room full of mirrors. And that if f***ing narcisistic.

And this is why, after telling you my story (my “something”), I am now looking you deep in the eye. This is going right there where this blue-light display alerts your retina to the point where you can’t sleep. I am readying a pen and paper (truthfully, my notion page, but it does have a pen and paper emoji), to take note of your “something”.

I want to know that I am wrong, but I also want to know why. Only if I know why, can I hand your something on to someone else, who is in the same position as me.

I am waiting over here, with a mop, to soak up what you say, in an educated dialogue. Make it dirty my friend, I brought my squeaky cleaning gloves and I want to put them to work!Phew, what a brew! I hope you had something VERY strong with this article. Usually, I’d suggest coffee, but today, maybe add a shot of alcohol. Either way, I hope you had an electrifying read, just like me staying up until 5:30 am to write this. I send a warm and sleepy hug from my mug to you!Yours, Hug in a Mug ☺
