Current Enter the Dragon: Bruce Lee’s International Call to Action.

February 2020. Submitted Academy Award Film Scholar Grant to allow for the support of the completion of the book. Draft of the book to be written in 2021; final version to be published in 2022. Jerod, the grant writer, guided me. Andrea Stein, Allen Rice, and Stephen Garrison proofed the final version.

An academic historic overview of the Asian, Asian American, and global context of Enter the Dragon (1973) and the influence of an action classic, for the 50th Anniversary in 2023. On April 17, 2013, the Academy celebrated the 40th anniversary of Enter the Dragon, one of the greatest martial arts films ever. In just three years, 2023, we shall arrive at another cultural moment, the 50th anniversary of the release of this film and the tragic death of Bruce Lee. This book will be released as part of that celebration. The goals of the book are manifold. It will be the first detailed study to place Enter the Dragon within the context of Asian American cinema. The book will examine the way the Dragon film changed how film audiences accept Asians as action heroes. It will demonstrate how the Buddhist theory of samsara functions as karmic trigger points in Bruce Lee’s career, creating cinematic transformations. Kung Fu owes much to the Shaolin Temple, a Buddhist monastery where the fighting arts started. The theory of samsara, death and rebirth, is articulated in Bruce Lee’s history, marked by key moments that could have defeated him but from which he rose, again and again, to become even more successful. Various chapters in the book will examine these moments, confirming the importance of samsara to our understanding not only of the changes that shaped Lee’s career, but also of those changes that are capable of shaping cinematic history.
