Durga Puja : An Outsider’s Experience

Bengal’s Most Spectacular Festival That Transports You Into A World Of Bliss

We are already halfway through , the biggest festival for all Bengalis that has earned its place on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

I have been born and brought up in Bengal but never really picked up on the local culture around here. I am not a Bengali and it was only after enrolling in college, I came to appreciate and learn a lot about the culture.While the term ‘outsider’ may seem like a cruel distinction, my personal experience paints a beautiful picture on the other side of the coin. Since my childhood, let alone celebrating the festival, I had never indulged in the festivities wholeheartedly, stepping out of the house with my family so as to not feel left out.

However, a few days ago when I experienced the vibrant hue and brilliancy of the Puja Pandals. I can proudly say that as a Non — Bengali, exploring and encountering this new world was nothing short of fascinating.

To brief the readers who do not know about Durga Puja, it is primarily a five day festival that marks the victory of the Goddess over the asur (demon), Mahishasura. It celebrates her victory over evil, several devotees setting up pandals — both big and small, unveiling her statue and paying their dues. Durga Puja is celebrated not only in India but in many parts of the world, making headlines after it was celebrated in Times Square, New York on 5th and 6th October, 2024.

Perhaps the most famous activity is Pandal hopping, visiting pandals across the city to witness the magnificent architecture and creativity. The pandals are made of all sorts of elements be it wood, bamboo, cloth, hay or even discarded materials to uphold waste management.

writes that, “With 144 Municipal Wards under KMC, and assuming each ward has at least 35–40 pandals, the total figure reaches around 5,000 pandals approximately”. I had the opportunity to visit some of them around my area, stepping into a new world with every pandal I adored.

It showcases the hard work and craftsmanship of these artists who have given it their all. One of the most memorable pandals was definitely the underwater metro themed pandal at Jagar Mukherjee Park, Kolkata that replicates the of Kolkata. Here is an image below —

While some aim at aesthetics, others send a deep message through their art. These include the Green Pandal at Lalabagan, Kolkata that is created by using over 8,000 plants, sending a deep message about conservation. Here are few images below —

The raindrop themed pandal at the Salt Lake AK Block, Kolkata stunned everyone with their rainwater conservation pandal, taking social media by storm.Check the video here — A pandal set up at Kashi Bose Lane, Kolkata with its theme of ‘Ratnagarva’, did shed light on the prominent people who played a role in abolishing Sati ( widow burning). Even though i do not share the same faith, knowing that these are temporary and would be dismantled a few days later was absolutely heartbreaking. The connection to the festival goes beyond religion, it is a celebration of art, paying respect to the contributions of many who have strived relentlessly to put up the show.

As I sum up my thoughts, I have been drawn by the beauty and sophistication of the festival that has many layers to it. I came as an outsider but it seems that every Durga Puja in the future will be something I would enjoy. Following the principle of unity in diversity, it is not bounded by religion or community, rather an invitation to rejoin in the triumph of good over evil.

What to add if you do not have any experience?

Even as a fresher, you must deliver something that clearly communicates to your client that you know what you’re doing. Start off by picking what you are really passionate about and if you have picked your niche already — start by writing mock pieces.For instance, pick any brand and rewrite their brand voice or write a few SEO blogs for them to highlight how you can improve their rank. If you have previous articles that are published in your school, college or other publications, that’s a plus point !Once you have gathered everything, it is now time to organize them properly based on their fields to showcase your versatility. Should you add only your best work?

The general rule of thumb is to add your best work or published work that has been loved widely in the past. Your client will definitely not spend hours reading all your articles, therefore it is important to choose your best work wisely.However, your best work of 5 or 10 copies may not always appeal to the client. In such a case I personally include a complex or relatively difficult writing project or research article I have worked on to get an upper hand.

Now again, this does not have to be rocket science that confuses the client, rather something that proves you will put in that extra effort.

How to organize your portfolio?

A simple way to go about this after you have created the about folder is to create separate folders of separate niches. A clean design will not only make navigation easier but also impress your client.If you are a copywriter, blogger and do social media marketing — create three separate folders and add your work inside them. In terms of copywriting, make separate folders for sales pages, landing pages, ads, email copies and other projects.If you are a creative writer or journalist, add your articles, reports and files in their respective categories so the employer can find what he’s looking for. It reflects your professionalism and instead of scrambling through the whole portfolio, your clients can clearly focus on your work.

Add a letter of recommendation or testimonials

Once again, if you do not have any that is completely fine. As soon as you gain more experience, start including these LOR and testimonials to enhance credibility.With positive reviews and social proof, you are bound to stand out from the rest of the crowd. I started getting more clients with this method, making a big difference in how my application was perceived knowing that I have past experience.

It is NOT a one time task — keep updating your portfolio

I cannot stress enough on how important it is to update your portfolio from time to time. Your writing improves daily and it is crucial that you include them to attract more clients.Your portfolio may look perfect for the time being but updating it every two or three months or while applying will make sure it’s not outdated.The writing portfolio you present is more than your curated articles or sales copy — it is your voice and style. Thus, do not rush the process and go step by step because this is THE determining factor while applying.
