Washington. April 4, 1949. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created by the United States along with twelve other nations on both sides of the Atlantic who pledged to protect each other in the event of any aggression against a member of the pact. Since its founding in 1949, the organization has expanded in number to 32 member countries. NATO has been and remains an international body designed to maintain the security of its members and to ensure essential diplomatic relations with other countries considered ‘dangerous or belligerent’ outside the bloc, such as Russia.

Today, the organization is losing influence in several strategic points of the geopolitical chessboard. In Africa and specifically in the Sahel, a shift of powers is being noticed, tilting the balance towards the Eastern group with China and Russia in the lead. In addition, the BRICS group of emerging countries, who it can be argued have already emerged, are organizing against the United States and thus against the NATO group. What is happening in Africa?
