The ongoing civil war in Sudan, known as the 2023 Sudan conflict, erupted on April 15, 2023, primarily between two military factions: the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti. This conflict stems from long-standing tensions between Sudan's military and paramilitary groups, exacerbated by power struggles following the 2021 military coup that derailed Sudan's transition to civilian rule after the ousting of longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

Reasons Behind the Conflict

The central cause of the conflict is the rivalry between General al-Burhan and Hemedti. Both leaders have sought dominance over Sudan’s military and governance structures, particularly during the negotiation process for integrating the RSF into the regular armed forces. Disagreements over the timeline and process for this integration ignited the violence.
Transition to Civilian Rule: After Bashir’s fall, Sudan had been undergoing a fragile transition to democracy. The 2021 coup, led by al-Burhan and supported by Hemedti, interrupted this transition, causing domestic unrest. Both factions have since clashed over the future governance of Sudan.
