And the growing indifference of its commuters

People must subconsciously know that you must be a bit socially unaware or just intentionally unsympathetic to the people around you if you’re going to blast music on your phone at full volume. It would be easy to say that the people doing this are kids or young adults, but frequently I have seen adults do the same.

Upon moving back to London, I was completely astounded by the sheer amount of social indifference people had on the bus, watching Youtube videos on loudspeaker, talking to their friends on FaceTime on loudspeaker, or just doomscrolling for the entire length of the journey, again on loudspeaker. Sensitive to the city again and its density I purchased a small motorbike and managed to extricate myself from the whims of London buses. But with winter approaching again, I will have to succumb to the odd journey here and there. Recently, I and 10 other commuters shared a train compartment with yet another man choosing to blare his music out loud at full volume while we all sat there silent. How many times has this happened I thought, yet none of us will say anything.

I have been close to asking people to turn their music off but always stop myself at the last second. As rage-inducing as it is: is it really worth it? If things kick off and I’m faced…
