Another Rant On Social Media

For the most part, compared to some people I know, I’m pretty digitally uninvolved. Yes, I have Instagram and Facebook accounts, but I haven’t posted anything in five years. Like most, I rationalize keeping them because I have specific people on both platforms who might want to reach out to me. Yet, there should be a much easier way to contact me without acquiescing to my data being harvested and my self-esteem deteriorating with every scroll. I removed the apps from my phone but still find myself accessing them through the web browser and continuing to scroll down. These days, I cringe when anyone posts anything, ever. If you make money from social media and need to cultivate an audience through engagement, then fine, I get it. But it’s interesting to observe, into the second decade after the advent of social media, that when I see someone posting about their holiday or fun weekend, I just ask myself, what on earth are you doing?Sometimes I hear the argument that people use these platforms to share their lives with people they care about, close friends and family. Maybe they live abroad and use Instagram as a constant way to interact with loved ones in a non-direct way. So why have thousands of presumably superfluous followers? Hasn’t it been established that this is just a desperate attempt to mask all the other unfulfilling days in one’s life? Yet, I still, not always and not necessarily…
